Prof. dr. Marcus Düwell

Prof. dr. Marcus Düwell is sinds 1 februari 2002 hoogleraar Wijsgerige Ethiek aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Hij is met name gespecialiseerd in vragen naar de rechtvaardiging van morele aanspraken, naar de mogelijkheden van ethische theorie en ethiek in geneeskunde en biologie. Hij is sinds 2003 onderzoeksdirecteur van het Ethiek Instituut van de Universiteit Utrecht en sinds 2005 wetenschappelijk directeur van de Landelijke Onderzoekschool Ethiek.

Düwell studeerde wijsbegeerte, letteren en godgeleerdheid in Tübingen en München. Hij promoveerde aan de filosofische faculteit van de Universiteit Tübingen met een proefschrift over de relatie tussen ethiek en esthetiek. Vanaf 1990 werkte hij enkele jaren in het Interfakultäre Zentrum für Ethik in den Wissenschaften (IZEW) aan de Universiteit Tübingen, vanaf 1993 als wetenschappelijke coördinator. Hij was verantwoordelijk voor het onderzoekswerk, de projecten en het management van het IZEW. Vanaf 2011 geeft prof. Düwell leiding aan het NWO-project What Can the Humanities Contribute to Practical Self-Understanding?

Marcus Düwell is professor of Ethics at Utrecht University since 2002. He is specialized in questions concerning the justification of moral claims and the possibilities of ethics in medicine and biology. Sincs 2003 he is the scientific director of the Ethics Institute of Utrecht University and since 2005 he occupies the same function at the National Research School of Ethics in the Netherlands.

Düwell studied philosohy, humanities and theology at the Universities of Tubingen and Munchen. He gained his PhD at the Faculty of Philosophy in Turingen on a thesis concerning the relation between ethics and esthetics. From 1990, he worked for the Interfaculty Centre for Ethics in Science (IZEW) in Turingen, where he became scientific director in 1993. He was responsible for both research and management of the institute. From 2011 he leads the Dutch NWO-project "What Can the Humanities Contribute to Practical Self-Understanding?"
