Why is better data essential for gender equality?

In the past few years, the public debate about the position of women in society has regained momentum. #MeToo has helped raise awareness of sexual violence against women, and more and more people are speaking up about the worldwide gender pay gap. Gender equality is on the map. But progress is slow. According to historian Sarah Carmichael we need more reliable data to be able to better measure progress, and develop better policies.
