Media richten zich vaak op zijn persoonlijkheid om zijn acties en uitspraken te begrijpen. Maar volgens historicus Quinn Slobodian (Universiteit van Boston) en schrijver Ben Tarnoff is Musk zoveel meer dan een individu. Hij is de belichaming van een nieuw politiek en economisch tijdperk, waar de macht steeds meer in handen komt te liggen van techbedrijven. In hun nieuwe boek Muskisme: een gids voor de verbijsterden (De Geus) onderzoeken ze de krachten die Musk gevormd hebben, van Zuid-Afrika tot Sillicon Valley, en Space X tot DOGE.
