Engelstalig symposium

Knowledge of our genes makes it, in principle, possible to develop individual custom-made medicine. Does everyone in the future own his or her medicine? This sounds futuristic, but is in part a reality. The expectations are high, but will it really be the breakthrough needed in medical science?

Researchers in science and the pharmaceutical industry reveal the potential of gene therapy in this symposium. Genes can show what diseases you are prone to. Diseases that are caused by an 'error' in the DNA might no longer be incurable in the future, because gene therapy can fix the mistake. At this point, research is done into the treatment of serious diseases such as muscular dystrophy. Also the treatment of breast cancer for example, can benefit from the knowledge of each individual's genetic makeup. The diagnosis is also faster and more accurately set and a tailor-made treatment is possible.

Are hereditary disorders, but also heart disease or cancer, going to be a thing of the past thanks to gene therapy and the knowledge of our individual genes? And what is the downside of this tinkering with our genetic material?

Prof. dr. Thierry VandenDriessche (Gentechnologie, KU Leuven) geeft een inleiding op het thema gentherapie. Dr. Ron Kerkhoven (Nederlands Kanker Instituut) doet onderzoek naar gepersonaliseerde geneeskunde bij borstkanker. Hans Schikan (Prosensa Therapeutics) gaat in op clinical trials bij de behandeling van Duchenne, een spierziekte die voorheen ongeneeslijk was. Ten slotte zal de Britse arts en schrijver dr. James Le Fanu een visie geven op de betekenis van gentherapie in de geschiedenis en toekomst van de geneeskunde. Welke ethische kwesties spelen mee? Gert Storm (Biofarmacie en Farmaceutische Technologie, UU) is dagvoorzitter.

'Ingenious medicine' wordt georganiseerd i.s.m. studenten van het Xtrack 2010 honoursprogramma. Het symposium is gratis en voor iedereen toegankelijk en geldt voor biomedische masterstudenten als LS-seminar.
