Thompsons' research focuses on the political economy of energy and the democratic, economic, and geopolitical disruptions of the twenty-first century. She grouped these insights in her book Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century (Oxford University Press, 2022). She is also a regular panellist on the podcast Talking Politics and a columnist for The New Statesman.
