Dodds researches in the areas of geopolitics and security, media/popular culture, ice studies and the international governance of the Antarctic and the Arctic. He specialises in the geopolitics and security of the Polar Oceans and the blue/ice humanities; the exploration of discourses on the seas, oceans and ice in art.

Dodds has worked with governments, commercial and parliamentary stakeholders. He is trustee of the Royal Geographical Society and Hon. Fellow of British Antarctic Survey. He published many books, of which the latest include The Arctic: What Everyone Needs to Know (2019, with Mark Nuttall) and Ice: Nature and Culture (2018), about how human communities have made sense out of ice throughout history.

From 2010 to 2015, Dodds was the editor of The Geographical Journal, and is editorial member of journals such as Geopolitics, Political Geography and Marine Policy. Dodds was awarded the annual Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2005 for “an outstanding contribution to political geography and ‘critical geopolitics’”.

Prof. dr. Klaus Dodds is hoogleraar Geopolitiek aan Royal Holloway, Universiteit van Londen. Hij houdt zich onder meer bezig met de politiek rond de Noordpool en Antarctica.

Dodds werkt momenteel aan een onderzoeksproject over de geopolitieke ontwikkelingen in de Noordpool. Hij publiceerde meerdere boeken over het onderwerp, waaronder het recente The Arctic: What Everyone Needs to Know (2019) en Ice: Nature and Culture (2018), over hoe samenlevingen door de eeuwen heen met ijs zijn omgegaan.

Hij heeft ook een bijzondere interesse voor media en populaire cultuur. Zo schreef hij o.a. een boek over James Bond: The World is Not Enough: The Geographies, Genders and Geopolitics of James Bond (2016).

Dodds is curator van de Royal Geographical Society en erelid van de British Antarctic Survey. In 2005 ontving hij de jaarlijkse Philip Leverhulme Prijs voor zijn bijdrage aan politieke geografie en ‘kritische geopolitiek’.
