In haar proefschrift 'Anxious Aesthetics: Memes and Alienation in Digital Capitalism' onderzoekt ze de sociale kracht van memes. Memes kunnen mensen verbinden door middel van zwarte humor en dienen vaak als katalysator voor maatschappelijke kritiek of politiek verzet. Ze is geïnteresseerd in hoe memes een reflectie zijn van de desillusie die gebruikers voelen t.a.v platforms en de platformeconomie. Nieuwe en gevleugelde termen als het post-naïeve internet, het donkere woud of 'enshittification' (ook wel 'verkuttificering' of 'platformverval' in het Nederlands genoemd) laten zien dat de wildgroei in sociale mediaplatforms is verworden tot een giftig landschap, vol met bedrijven en makers die op winst uit zijn. Via memes zien we dat gebruikers deze teleurstelling uiten en elders op zoek gaan naar wat zij beschouwen als een ‘beter’ internet.
