In haar onderzoek combineert ze visies uit zowel de sociale- als de geesteswetenschappen. Haar expertise ligt in transnationale theorieën over feminisme, (post)koloniale geschiedenis en cinema, en media- en conflictstudies. Ze ontving in 2015 een ERC-beurs voor het project CONNECTINGEUROPE waarin ze de relatie tussen migratie en digitale technologieën in Europa onderzoekt.

Ponzanesi ontving haar PhD in Literatuur- en Genderstudies aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Ze heeft veel wetenschappelijke publicaties op haar naam staan.

Sandra Ponzanesi is professor of Gender and Postcolonial Studies at the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University. She is also Head of the Humanities department at University College Utrecht.

As a researcher she is connected to the focus area 'Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights'. She likes to keep an interdisciplinary perspective drawing from theories from both the social sciences and the humanities. Her research areas include postcolonial studies, transnational feminist theories, visual culture, European migration studies, and media and conflict studies. Ponzanesi is currently working on the project CONNECTINGEUROPE, which aims to investigate the relation between migration and digital technologies.

Ponzanesi obtained her PhD in Comparative Literature and Gender Studies at Utrecht University. She has published in many renowned academic journals.
