Xiao-Shan Yap examines what sustainable governance of outer space looks like at a time when human activity is rapidly expanding beyond Earth. Yap is Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University, where she leads the five-year ERC-funded research programme PLANETSTEWARDS (2024–2029) on planetary stewardship and earth-space sustainability. She pioneered the concept of earth-space sustainability, which advocates addressing challenges on Earth and in space in an integrative way. In 2020, she founded the Earth-Space Sustainability research initiative.

Xiao-Shan Yap onderzoekt hoe duurzaam bestuur van de ruimte eruit kan zien, nu menselijke activiteiten zich in hoog tempo uitbreiden tot voorbij de aarde. Yap is universitair docent aan het Copernicus Instituut voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling aan de Universiteit Utrecht, waar ze het vijfjarige ERC-gefinancierde onderzoeksprogramma PLANETSTEWARDS (2024–2029) leidt over planetair rentmeesterschap en duurzaamheid op aarde en in de ruimte. Ze introduceerde het concept van aarde-ruimte duurzaamheid, dat pleit voor een integrale aanpak van uitdagingen op aarde én in de ruimte.
