Virginia Berridge is professor Geschiedenis en hoofd van het Centre for history in public health aan de London school of hygiene and tropical medicine.

Zij is een expert op het gebied van het na-oorlogse volksgezondheid beleid en in het bijzonder aangaande roken, illigale drugs en alcohol, de rol van de media en de relatie tussen wetenschap en beleid. Haar recentste boek is Marketing health. Smoking and the discourse of public health, 1945-c.2000 (Oxford University Press, 2007). Zij schreef ook twee boeken met andere auteurs Environment Health and History (met M. Gorsky) (Palgrave, 2012) en Public Health in History(met M. Gorsky en A. Mold) (Open University Press, 2011)

Virginia en haar team hebben een rijke historie van beleid-relevant onderzoek. Er is een lopend programma naar betrokkenheid van onderzoek en beleid dat gesponsord wordt door het Wellcome trust en men organiseert regelmatig bijeenkomsten voor geschiedkundigen, wetenschappers en beleidsmakers in de volksgezondheid. Prof. Berridge wordt regelmatig om advies gevraagd door beleidsmakers en is betrokken bij meerdere initiatieven omtrent drugs en alcohol beleid. Het ministerie van volksgezondheid in Engeland benoemde haar in de raad van Alcohol Education Research. Zij is lid van de raad van bestuur van de Alcohol Education Research Council. Ook geeft zij advies aan de Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD).

Virginia Berridge is Professor of History and Director of the Centre for History in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is an expert on the history of post-Second World War public health policy and in particular: smoking, illicit drugs and alcohol, the role of the media and the relationship between science and policy. Her most recent book is Marketing health. Smoking and the discourse of public health, 1945-c.2000 (Oxford University Press, 2007). She also co-authored two books: Environment Health and History (with M. Gorsky)(Palgrave, 2012) and Public Health in History (with M. Gorsky and A. Mold) (Open University Press, 2011)

Virginia and her team have a long pedigree of delivering policy-relevant research. They have an ongoing programme of research and policy engagement funded by the Wellcome Trust and hold regular events that bring together historians, scientists and health policymakers.

Virginia is regularly consulted by policymakers and has been involved in many initiatives on drugs and alcohol policy. The Department of Health recently appointed her to the Alcohol Education Research Council. She is a trustee of Alcohol Research UK and has been advising the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD).
