Political scientist Olga Burlyuk on why our understanding of the Russian war in Ukraine is often limited.

For nearly four years, the media have been reporting daily on the Russian invasion. So we may think we understand what is happening in Eastern Europe. Yet, according to Ukrainian political scientist Olga Burlyuk (UvA), Western analysts too often claim authority without truly knowing Ukraine. In doing so, they inadvertently play into Russia’s hands. How can Burlyuk’s insider perspective help us to understand the war? And which stories do Ukrainians tell about their own country?
