Ze geeft les in mensenrechten, transitional justice en democratisering in internationale relaties. Deze onderwerpen zijn ook onderdeel van haar onderzoeksfocus. In 1997 behaalde ze haar master in political science and philosophy aan de Universiteit van Mannheim. In 2001 promoveerde Anja Mihr in de politieke wetenschappen aan de Vrije Universiteit in Berlijn. Haar promotieonderwerp was de impact van Amnesty International op de DDR in de jaren 1961-1989.

Van 2002-2006 was Mihr lid van de raad van bestuur van Amnesty International in Duitsland. Daarna was ze tot 2008 Europees programmadirecteur van de Europese Mastergraad in Mensenrechten en Democratisering bij het European Inter-University Center for Human Rights (EIUC) in Venetië. In 2008 was ze gasthoogleraar voor Mensenrechten bij de rechtenfaculteit van de Universiteit in Peking. Verder werkte Anja Mihr voor het Raoul Wallenberg Instituut voor Mensenrechten bij de Universiteit van Lund en bij het Duitse Instituut voor Mensenrechten in Berlijn. Daarnaast heeft ze veel gepubliceerd, waaronder Human Rights in the 21st Century, Continuity and Change since 9/11, een boek over mensenrechten in de 21e eeuw, waarin continuïteit en verandering sinds 9/11 worden besproken. Daarnaast bracht zij onlangs het boek 50 Years Amnesty International, Reflections and Perspectives uit, waarin de ontwikkelingen van de mensenrechtenorganisatie gedurende de afgelopen 50 jaar worden beschreven.

Anja Mihr is associate professor at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) of Utrecht University. She teaches human rights, transitional justice and democratization in international relations. These subjects are also part of her research focus. In 1997, she received her MA in political science and philosophy at Mannheim University in Germany. She received a PhD in political science at the Free University in Berlin in 2001. Her thesis dealt with the impact of Amnesty International on East Germany 1961-1989.

From 2002 untill 2006 Mihr was a member of the Executive Board of Amnesty International in Germany. In 2008 she became European programme director of the European Masters degree in Human Rights en Democratization at the European Inter-University Center for Human Rights (EIUC) in Venice. In that same year she became a visiting professor in Human Rights at the Law Faculty of Beijing University in China. Mihr also worked at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute for Human Rights of Lund University and the German Institute of Human Rights in Berlin. Among her many publications is Human Rights in the 21st Century, Continuity and Change since 9/11, a recently published book on human rights in the 21st century, in which she discusses continuity and change after 9/11. She also recently published 50 Years Amnesty International, Reflections and Perspectives, that reflects on the work done by the human right organization.
