Onlangs publiceerde Fletcher zijn eerste boek Romancing the Wild. Cultural dimensions of ecotourism(2014).

Dr. Robert Fletcher works as assistant professor of International Development Studies in the department of Human Geography and Planning at Utrecht University. He was originally educated as a cultural anthropologist. In his research he combines anthropology and human geography in the field of political ecology. His research focuses on the cultural dimensions of sustainable development policy including ecotourism and climate change governance. Before he took on his position at Utrecht University, he worked as associate professor of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica.

Recently, he published his first book Romancing the Wild. Cultural dimensions of ecotourism(2014). In this book Fletcher argues that ecotourism resonates with particular cultural values of the white, upper-middle-class Westerners who make up the majority of ecotourists. Ecotourism derives from the western dichotomy between a realm of nature and a realm of culture in which 'the wild' is romanticized. In 2014 his edited volume Nature Inc. Environmental Conservation in the Neoliberal Agewas also published. The book revolves around the question whether market forces can solve the world's environmental problems and analyzes how neoliberal conservation is reshaping human-nature relations.
